Sarah will be giving a talk titled “Using the Law as Data” at BIALL’s Annual Conference to be held June 12-14 in Leeds, UK. Here’s the session description:

Players in the legal sector are looking for opportunities for leveraging data to improve their work and understanding. This work is anticipated to be transformational, generating new ways to understand legal systems and the law, and supporting new ways of working. However, it needs to be informed by understanding of how the structure of law and legal organizations affect how it can be appropriately used. The law has notable attributes which create both advantages and disadvantages. Some of these characteristics can be easily addressed, while others are likely to continue to enhance or limit the use of these datasets into the future. This can be expected to become more central to the work of managing legal information, and this session will discuss these issues and put them in context.
